Yesterday, February 7th, marked the born day for one of the greatest producers of all time, James “J Dilla” Yancey. However it marked the 10 year anniversary for one of the greatest rappers of all time, Christopher Lee Rios aka. “Big Punisher”. Cookin Soul and 2DopeBoyz took the opportunity to release this sort of tribute tape with some of Big Pun’s finest rappin over some classic Dilla. Because our crew at Da-What was engulfed in the Super Bowl, we didn’t get to make any tribute posts so I figured this would have to do.
Last Thursday, 2/4, I was able to check out Seattle Haiti Relief Hip Hop Show. The show was organized by Sol who also performed as did The Physics, Dyno Jamz and Common Market. It was a really cool oppurtunity to check out and support the local hip hop scene. I only really got to see Sol and Common Market perform but they were both really dope. Up top is a video of Common Market performing their song “Tobacco Road” and below are some more videos and a continued description of the concert. Read more »
Hope anyone who listened to my show enjoyed it, once again, I have the tracklist and download link under the jump. For those who didn’t get a chance to listen, I used my show as a sort of tribute to Def Jux, which is going on hiatus. You can read about it here. So I tried to play only music that was released on Def Jux or by artists who were once signed to Def Jux. Make requests via the comment section.

For all of us at DA WH@T, and our readers, Hip Hop has been life changing. Indie and alternative Hip Hop has been a huge mover within the game, and a lot of that is due to the indie label Definitive Jux. DEF JUX CEO and co-founder El-P announced today that DEF JUX will be taking a hiatus. He plans to due so in order to focus on his own production work. Many though the label that taught us the names of artists like Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Murs, Dizzee Rascal, RJD2, and many others was closing down for good, but the word is they’re just taking a break. Starting off the numbered portion of my countdown for 2010 is MaG hailing from the Bronx, New York. He has been building buzz around the net for a couple years now entering competitions hosted by the likes of DJ Green Lantern, being featured on multiple other projects and actually releasing two of his own last year: an EP produced entirely by G.C. called $5 Cover as well as his debut solo project I Ain’t Going Back to Retail. I will provide download links because both are definitely dope and worth multiple listens!
