We Are The World

So this isn’t strictly Hip Hop, but I think it’s important. Time Magazine’s March 1 issue had a really cool Brief History of Benefit Songs. I thought it was pretty cool, so I wanted to share it with you guys. The above video is the new We Are The World 25 for Haiti remake of Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie’s original track. After the jump are videos of the other benefit songs Time highlighted.

George Harrison performing “Something” in 1971 at the Concert for Bangladesh in Madison Square Garden

Paul McCartney’s 1979 Rockestra for Cambodian Human Rights violations

Band Aid (includes Sting, Bono, and George Michael) 1984, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” for African famine victims

1985, Artists United Against Apartheid “Sun City”

and of course…. the original We Are the World
