Top 10 to Watch For 2012

Alright y’all, my new year’s resolution was to write an article ever 2 weeks for 2012. So I am going to have at least 26 longer, written pieces to put up.  I’m excited to present the first one, one of my personal favorite parts of running this site.  Top 10 to Watch For. I am presenting the list today in its entireity and throughout the year I will highlight each artist and hopefully, accompany the piece with an interview. A lot of our earlier Top 10 to Watch Fors are beginning to enjoy a bit of commercial success and critical acclaim.  I try to pick artists who have not put out a major for sale debut. Top 10 to Watch For – #8 Laws

Laws is the number 8 to Watch For and I coincided this post with his new release on purpose.  The Florida resident and J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Asylum and Warner Brother signee has been working hard on his Paul McCartney tribute project and I cannot wait to hear it.

Top 10 to Watch For – #9 P.L.

Continuing the series, Number 9 to Watch For in 2011 is P.L. from Ann Arbor, MI and BET Freestyle Friday fame.  He won the famed contest five weeks in a row.  P.L.’s history in battle rap forces you to listen to each line he spits as he is either setting up or delivering a killer punch line with every word he spits.  He wastes no space or time as he uses every chance he can to prove his ability on the mic.  You can hear his hunger on each track whether it is a poppy industry beat or street-banger.

Top 10 To Watch For – #10 Vic Mensa

UPDATE: moved this to the top cause we have some dope new graphics starting with Vic.

To start off this year’s Top 10 to Watch for is Vic Mensa from Chicago.  He is making noise as an emcee within the hip hop community with great solo releases like his Straight Up EP in addition to his band Kids These Days picking up ground and even getting run on MTV Jams.  Although he is young, he shows definite promise as a true spitter that is wise beyond his years.  His maturity allows him to rap about things that one would not always expect from a teenager and that keeps his music refreshing.

Top 10 to Watch For 2011

It is the 3rd year of my series on the Top 10 to Watch For: the 10 guys who I think you should be paying attention to moving forward.  Last year I introduced the interview portion of the series and tried to accompany each of my posts with an artist interview but I got caught up in that and wasnt able to pay due attention to the other parts (like the mixtape).  So, this year I will be trying to find middle ground, I am going to announce all 10 of my artists at the same time in a list right now and throughout the year I will spotlight one of them and hopefully give yall an interview as well.  I am trying to work out the best timing and everything so bear with me, hit the jump to see Da-What.com’s 2011 TOP 10 to WATCH FOR!

Top 10 to Watch For #4-#1

I want to apologize for the execution of this Top 10 to Watch For List, I had chosen my emcees early this year but I also set out to interview each artist to accompany each post.  Now, the New Year has snuck up on me and it is almost time to introduce 15 new emcees for 2011.  I know you were supposed to be looking for these guys in 2010 but keep them in mind moving forward.  That being said, I am going to combine 4-1 into one post and I will be working on interviews with these guys as well.

Top 10 to Watch For 2010 – #5 Chip Tha Ripper

Overall, while I do like the idea of accompanying my Top 10 to Watch For list with interviews from the artist, I think that the execution of this plan has been less than stellar.  I am in the process of working out interviews with everyone left on my list but I am going to start announcing the list and posting interviews at other times because really a Top 10 to Watch For list should be out at the beginning of the year.  I am going to finish off this year’s, make some changes and get back at it again next year.

Top 10 to Watch For 2010 – #6 Luck-One

#6 to Watch for 2010 is Luck-One from Portland.  His discography is extremely limited, but the EP he released last year with producer Dekk is so good that I can listen to it on repeat until his next project drops.  Anu posted the EP back when it along with a write up, so that will function as the post.  However, I did get a chance to ask Luck some questions so hit the jump for a Da-What.com exclusive interview!

Top 10 to Watch For 2010 – #7 Pill

Atlanta has contributed quite a lot to hip-hop, from talented emcees to party starters to trap rappers.  Pill happens to be all three.  A brief listen to any of his three mixtapes displays his talent while also showing his sense of humor as well as a darker side brought out by his time on the streets.

Hollywood FLOSS comes in at #8 on our Top 10 to Watch For 2010 list.  If you have never heard of him, before you make any judgments let me just say that his music doesn’t sound like you think it does.  Hailing from Houston, TX, his music doesn’t sound like you think Houston does either, HF has his own sound that he has been developing for years.
