‘Da’ What is Hip Hop? – International Mav [Editorial]

International Mav hails from Chicago and wrote this week’s editorial for ‘Da’ What is Hip Hop.  There is no doubt that hip hop has evolved over its 3ish decade existence and some people have issues, others don’t.  International Mav definitely does not and makes valid points about the perception of hip hop music verses the perception of hip hop culture as a whole.

“Hip-hop is my way of expressing myself through music, fashion, language and my all around way of life.  It’s been a huge part of my life since a kid, I had a older cousin who turned me on to Rakim Paid in Full in the 80s and I never been the same since lol… Hip-hop has changed over the years and to me, personally, I’m ok with the change because everything has to grow.  So I’m not one of those guys who complain about it because hiphop isn’t just music.  Yeah, the music has changed but the culture itself is still alive and thriving in other elements like graf, fashion and the dialect we choose to use… As far as my region and hip-hop goes, Chicago is finally getting a chance to be heard on the global level with acts such as Chief Keef, King Louie, Spezno, Lil’ Durk and a few other names. Although many in the city don’t agree with their form of artistry, they have still managed to get the industry to pay attention to Chicago in a way that has never happened before.  It is really a good look for up and comers such as myself because I know eventually aside from the kind of music they make, people will want to know what else we have to offer and I plan on being at the forefront when it happens.” – International Mav
