THE Trill O.G. will be rocking Mezzanine SF this SUNDAY, March 23rd with Kirko Bangz. Bun B is a straight up legend and one of the best at transcending generations and bridging gaps. For those that don’t know, Bun is half of the Houston dup UGK with Pimp C, Rest in Peace. Since UGK’s debut Too Hard to Swallow came out 22 years ago, they have played a gigantic role in the South’s rise, the sound and hip hop as a whole. If you are reading this, there’s a good chance, you use slang that comes, directly or indirectly, from UGK.
Longevity is the name of the game and Bun B has got it. In addition to the 8 albums with Pimp C, he has 4 solo discs of his own. The 3rd in the Trill OG received a heralded 5 mics from The Source mag! Bun B was right there when Drake was blowing up, Pimp C signed Boosie, these guys’ influence can be found almost everywhere. Bun seems to have reached out to a number of younger guys, landing spots on many of the best mixtapes of late. Bun B is an OG to the core.
Kirko Bangz made a name for himself when he hit with “Drank in My Cup” in 2011. Since then he has been steady grinding releasing mixtapes and killing features for Freddie Gibbs, Ty Dolla $ign and more. And, I am sure, soaking up game on staying power from Bun B. Taking a newer H-town cat like Kirko Bangz out on tour is a fantastic example of Bun B doing what he can for hip hop and fulfilling a mentor-like role. It’s a great chance for Kirko’s fans to be exposed to his influences and of course, for Bun’s fans to see who’s new on the scene.
