Childish Gambino, also known as Donald Glover, has had quite the journey through the entertainment industry.  He is incredibly talented in a number of, related, mediums.  If you didn’t know, he wrote for “30 Rock” while an undergrad at NYU and he starred as Troy for years on “Community”.  His acting and writing background manifest themselves throughout his work from songwriting to music video treatments to his latest album’s accompanying script.

Gambino doesn’t do anything in the “normal” way.  He rolled out this tour with an interactive chat room starring pornstar, Abella Anderson.  I have been particularly interested and impressed with Gambino’s recent attempt to connect with his fans and reach out in different ways.  While he worked on Because the Internet, I saw him write on twitter, on numerous occasions, a location in New York where he would be playing his album and hanging out with fans. I was lucky enough to win tickets to the private party performance in the Bay Area and saw a very positive response to that whole run.

There is a lot going on in Childish Gambino’s head and it comes through in various ways.  He is making some really interesting music right now, though, and he definitely makes you think.  He also vented on twitter recently about his label situation, claiming that things have not happened the way they were promised and even went as far as to request that someone buy him out of his current contract.  I hope he finds a home that fits him artistically and business wise too.
