Idle Warship consists of Brooklyn emcee and hip-hop legend Talib Kweli and Philadelphia singer Res; the two will be performing a double-header at Yoshi’s San Francisco on May 23rd.  Res and Kweli have a storied musical history dating back to “Too Late” and “Back Again” with Reflection Eternal though Quality’s “Where Do We Go”, “Going Hard” and “We Got the Beat” from The Beautiful Struggle, “Everything Man” off Eardrum and “What’s Real” which can be found on Kweli’s most recent album Gravitas.

Having collaborated so many times, it was only right that Kweli and Res deliberately combine their talents and Idle Warship was created.  In 2009, they released Party Robot to critical acclaim boasting features from Saul Williams, Skyzoo, Blaqstarr and more. It is a chance for Kweli to experiment and branch out from the constraints that some feel hip-hop provides. Res get a lot of different looks on a new-age hip hop side project and gets to 1. Show off her range 2. Expand her horizons and learn new things.

Res’ soulful singing and the live instrumentation lend themselves much more to a venue like Yoshi’s than your standard “hip hop” concert.  It is a rare chance to experience this funky, soul music in this type of place.  Kweli is a seasoned master of ceremonies that both entertains and educates; Res can fill any room she wants with her powerful singing.  The follow up to Party Robot was the debut album on Blacksmith Music/Element 9 Habits of the Heart, which is produced mostly by DJ Khalil and Farhot.  Since that Kweli has put out a number of solo projects while Res paid tribute to Fleetwood Mac on ReFried Mac.
