A hypnotic head-nodder from three of Taylor Gang’s best emcees, the visual for “The Man” is an emphatic display of earned confidence. Directed by BCKYRD and premiered by Billboard, “The Man” sees TGOD linchpins Wiz Khalifa, J.R. Donato, and Chevy Woods revisiting their past and countings their blessings for their present situation. Chicago native J.R. Donato leads the song by detailing his come up, earning respect (and resistance) from his peers, and doing the necessary duties that come with growing a family. Chevy and Wiz provide a veteran’s perspective, bearing witness to the oft-complicated ascension to fame. Featuring smooth, introspective flows over a sunlight-drenched beat, populated with soaring guitar lines and chiming synths, “The Man” is a highlight from TGOD Vol 1. A compilation project that accompanied Taylor Gang’s signing to Atlantic Records, TGOD Vol. 1 features contributions from the crew’s entire roster and is a major showcase for the label’s young talent.

Donato explains the song’s significance to Billboard: “It’s important for black youth to feel proud about ourselves because we’re kings: it’s in our blood and our roots to be just that. Also, we’re told so much by cops, teachers, the upper class, etc, that we won’t be sh-t. So when you beat the statistics or beat the odds, show them anything is possible and this is what’s meant to be. Remain humble but let your presence be felt.”
